Fairness, Justice, Community: 11 Years in the Gorge, a Lifetime of Experience
“I am immensely proud of the work I and my team have done in Wasco County. But, as Dorothy said in The Wizard of Oz, there truly is ‘no place like home.’ I am running for District Attorney of Hood River County to continue the good work of DA Rasmussen and continue to ensure that our communities are safer and that we help everyone thrive by creating a justice system where people matter.
Immediately after I was elected as DA in Wasco County in the spring of 2020, our world changed dramatically. The COVID-19 virus upended all of our lives – kids were out of school, many people lost their jobs, and we really didn’t know what the future held. Then, that summer, the country was shocked by the murder of George Floyd and roiled by the resulting protests. Rising homelessness, fentanyl…. It was clear that we needed to do things differently.
During my time as District Attorney, I led efforts to implement new approaches to criminal justice that respect the needs of victims of crime while holding perpetrators accountable. These new tools, like special courts for those with drug and alcohol addiction issues, help troubled people become productive citizens while saving money and protecting our communities.

“I have seen the justice system make a real difference in people’s lives. Changes in how we charge, try, sentence, and treat people are doing more to help victims of crime to recover their lives impacted by criminal acts as well as hold perpetrators accountable and get their own lives back on track.” – Matt Ellis
